The word 'selvedge' relates to the 'self-edge' of fabric and it is often made on old shuttle looms, these vintage looms used to leave the fabric in one continuous thread and it would create sort of a finished edge and that is the self edge, just to kind of show you where the edge of the fabric was, but now they're starting to use it in decorative ways. 

Because the special loom, the typical roll of denim will be a little under three feet wide and the weaving processes is much slower than on modern machines. It have special texture,and it's actually the variation and imperfections of the weaving process that lend character to the best Japanese denim. And also Japanese denim is created with a variety of different proprietary dyeing processes. 
Compare to regular denim, It's thicker and heavier, It is popular among many famous brand like Levis, BIG John, Blue Blue Japan, and also famous among many famous icon so It' s much more expensive.
